What kind of New Year traditions are they trying to follow in Hungary?

And Hungary is no exception in this regard. Hungarians have their own traditions. Including the New Year, which they call Sylvester. In memory of a Catholic saint who died just on December 31st, on the eve of 336 AD. Just do not confuse him with another, already literary character. In which the parrot constantly commemorated in vain the universal equivalent in the form of piastres. This second one is far from holy. Yes, and he lived much later than that Sylvestre, who in the end became a saint.

But when the Hungarians had a tradition to not gorge on the New Year's Eve strongly - no one now will remember. But the fact that those times were not the best in the history of the people is for sure. As in the New Year's Eve, but to burst out from the heart! And pick up all the few stocks that are in the house. And what's next?! The rest of the year - the teeth on the shelf?

Since then, the Hungarians have been trying hard not to gorge so that they will not suffer from a shortage in the coming year.

But bread on the holiday table must be. A whole, unpacked loaf. But to cut it all at once - in no case impossible. Just a piece. And - as needed. Only in this situation, the bread in the family will be all year.

As a New Year's dessert on the Hungarian New Year's table must be present retesh. Or, as it is called in German-speaking countries, strudel. Baking from thinly rolled, and then extended unleavened dough, on which a variety of stuffing fits. After that, the future retesh is rolled up and sent to the oven.

By the way, the Hungarians, in spite of the Austrians or the Germans, sincerely believe that the very first roll of this kind could be prepared only from them. Because it is in the Hungarian wheat flour that the gluten content is so high that it allows you to stretch the dough so thin that it turns out to be it. Retesh. And not some kind of strudel.

And on how thinly dough and stretched dough, by the way, a lot depends. The more of its layers in the New Year's holiday, the richer and fuller its filling, the better will be the life in the coming year.

But you will not eat bread with dessert. And not a holiday feast, as a rule, begins with it. The main Hungarian dish on New Year's Eve - luncheon fuzelek. Lentils with smoked sausages. And if there is a lentil on the table, the purse in the coming year will certainly not be empty. And without any doubt, it will be replenished with coins in an amount corresponding to the number of lentil grains that lie with each Hungarian in his festive plate with luncheon fuzelecs.

However, if in what house there is no lentil for one reason or another, then it can be replaced with peas or beans. But the dish of these legumes is an indispensable attribute of any Hungarian New Year's table. And in it, in turn, there should be a small piece of some kind of vegetable. Carrots, for example. And the one with whom this piece will be on the plate, for sure ... One hundred percent - will not experience difficulties with money.

Well, and if he gets into the plate of a young single man or unmarried girl ... They will definitely find their soul mate in the coming year. And get married well. Or - get married.

But in order to find out for whom, specifically, girls baked for the festive table pogacho. Small puff salty buns with cracklings. In the dough of each of which was put a piece of paper on which the names of familiar guys were written. It’s clear to whom I have got a bun - who will be called as a future husband and with what name will you change yours after marriage.

For those who have already decided on their second half - lovers and newlyweds, the main treat at the New Year's table was a full bottle. honey. To love was sweet and long. And in order for the omen to be sure to come true, at midnight, you need to brush your lips with the contents of the can and ... kiss.

Honey smeared lips and children. To respect their parents, not foul language and grow up decent people.

But ... You can’t get too much honey. Therefore, in those settlements that lay near the water, on the New Year’s Hungarian table in addition to lunchtime, the fuseleks were fish dishes. After all, how many scales - so much money in the house! Well, if the fish is not on the table, but in the river ... Then with it, good luck can swim away from home.

But if there is no river or lake nearby and getting fresh fish is not so easy, then the main symbol of good luck in the upcoming new year became baked suckling pighoisted on a large dish covered with a four-leaf clover.

In no case was it possible to eat on New Year's Eve, so this is a turkey that brings anger and trouble into the house, and a chicken that rakes away good luck behind its back with its paws.

And so that this does not happen (even if there are no chicken on the table!), It is necessary to fill all the food containers available in the house - sugar bowls, salt shakers, jars for flour and cereals, purses, a can of pork fat. Not necessarily to the brim. Let it be just a little, the main thing is that in all the containers there should be something. And then the house in the coming year will be a full bowl. And luck does not turn away from all who live under its roof.

On the other hand ... Piglet is, of course, good. But the luck of people firmly attached to the Hungarian land, depended not only on him. And the weather. And in order to find out the forecast for the next year, on December 31, it was necessary to take 12 cloves garlic, each of which was assigned to a specific month, incise them, salt the resulting “wound” and ... And look in the morning of the first day of the new year - which clove will be wet to find out which month to wait for rain or snow.

And on the 31st I had to do as much housework as possible. In order not to start the new year with cleaning or washing. However, we have such a tradition.

Starting the same year in Hungary you need to ... washing. Yes, not anyhow what, and fresh, just brought water from the well. And - as soon as possible. Fresh well water, which was called “golden” on January 1, according to Hungarian belief, brings not only health, but also beauty and luck.

In no case can anything be done in Hungary on the first day of the new year? argue. Especially - with households. Otherwise, the whole year will be like this. Extremely quarrelsome.

In order not to disappear in an unknown direction, the benefits of a home nurse - cows, can not be January 1 give away anything or take out of the house or from the yard. Otherwise, you will not see milk in the coming year as your ears. Even if in the house you have not had a cow for a long time, and milk is bought at the nearest grocery.

Who knows what else the last year’s demons can do with this product? And more fun. To know the spirits and demons - that they are not afraid of them in this house!

Why? Good tradition. Maybe we will follow the Hungarian example? And we will celebrate the New Year fun and loud! The latter, however, within reasonable limits. And then you never know ... Suddenly the neighbors will not like it?

Although ... In order not to worry about the neighbors, maybe they should immediately be invited to visit? We have, they say, not only loud. But also fun! And lunchtime fuselek is already on the table ...
